<h3>It&#8217;s Easy To Avoid the Important Things</h3>
<p>Running your own business is tough work. You have to learn skills that you never previously dreamed you&#8217;d need. And you have to do it at the same time as earning money. Or income dries up. So, it&#8217;s easy to avoid asking those questions. Why make it tougher, eh? Trouble is, once you do that your income starts to dry up anyway. If you avoid these questions, you&#8217;ll end up avoiding a future for your business.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s why in this post I&#8217;m asking you to consider these questions now. It&#8217;s almost never too late to address them. To make it interesting, why not choose one and post your answer in the comments section below? I&#8217;d like to know how you&#8217;re doing and your answer may help another business do better.</p>
<h3>Seven Vital Questions You Must Ask About Your Brand</h3>

<h4><em>What do you stand for?</em></h4>
<p>There&#8217;s a well-known quote that goes: &#8220;If you stand for nothing, you&#8217;ll fall for anything&#8221; (attributed to lots of people). This is true about business too. For people to believe in you and your brand, you have to have some values that you believe in. Maybe it&#8217;s time to articulate them?</p>

<h4><em>Who are you not prepared to do business with?</em></h4>
<p>Every few years we have to turn down an enquiry from a potential client. Sometimes it&#8217;s meant turning down something lucrative, and that&#8217;s been tough. But the decision has always been easy, because we only do business with people or companies that share our ethical standpoint. Consider this question now: who would you have to turn away?</p>

<p>I ask this question a lot, and anyone who&#8217;s attended one of my workshops will tell you that I don&#8217;t let you get away with fudging the answer. What is the one thing that sets you apart from the competition.</p>

<h4><em>Who inspires you? </em></h4>
<p>We don&#8217;t find success alone. Every business person that has made it, knows the value of inspiration. It&#8217;s what keeps you going during the tough times as well as what makes you push harder when times are easy. Who inspires you to push yourself and your business further than you ever thought possible?</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<h4><em>Why should anyone care whether your business succeeds or fails?</em></h4>
<p>Seriously, why should anyone care? You may think you sell the best left-handed widgets in the world, but why should anyone else care whether they get them from you or another supplier? Your passion for what you do must translate into a similar passion in your clients. Apple does this famously well. Maybe it&#8217;s time to find a way to encourage the same kind of loyalty by going beyond just your products and services. Provide something more than the simple business transaction.</p>

<h4><em>Do your clients still want the things you sell?</em></h4>
<p>This is a big one. Your product may have been hot stuff last year but do enough people actually want it now? Maybe they can get it online for less; if that&#8217;s the case, maybe it&#8217;s time to adapt, evolve and diversify. Is what you sell limited to your product or service, or is there more to it?</p>

<h4><em>What are you most afraid to face up to?</em></h4>
<p>You know those jobs that you prevaricate over? The ones that just never seem to get done. Those are the things you&#8217;re afraid to look at. Which of the questions above did you skip? Look deeper: maybe you should take a good, hard look at why you skipped them.</p>

Sometimes it&#8217;s a simple thing like poor navigation preventing website visitors from finding their way to your best content. When your website is driving clients away though, it needs to be addressed immediately.</p>

<p>But how do you know which are the worst problems? Luckily for you I&#8217;ve put together a list of the top six problems (in reverse order) so from now on it should be easy for you to avoid or repair. Of course, you have to read them first before you can fix them. So, what are you waiting for?</p>
<h3>6. More Clients</h3>
<p>Want more clients? Wondering why your website doesn&#8217;t generate enquiries? It may be high time you had your website looked at. Firstly, get a business-savvy web designer to give your site a design audit right away. Then act on their recommendations quickly before they get out of date. Nearly everything has an expiry date on it nowadays, so why would good ideas be any different? In our experience, a website under performs for one of two main reasons. Either it needs intensive care or your use of it does. Often it&#8217;s a mix of both things, so get cracking and find the answers quickly.</p>
<p>CLUE: <em>what measurable objectives have you set for your website? You have set some, haven&#8217;t you?</em></p>
<h3>5. Customer Care</h3>
<p>In the past, companies that didn&#8217;t care about how their clients felt about their products or services could survive. Some even prospered. Happily, those days are gone now. The balance of power has shifted from the seller to where it ought to be: into the hands of buyers. The Internet has helped that process and the arrival of social media accelerated it. If you care about your clients&#8217; opinions, your website could be your greatest asset. Give them access to you via your website as well as telephone and you could be creating a multitude of opportunities for your business to help your clients. Before and after the sale. Don&#8217;t forget to add your social media contact points too. Not everyone wants to send an email or pick up a phone.</p>
<p>CLUE: <em>get an impartial person to try and contact you from your website.</em></p>
<h3>4. You Look Out of Date</h3>
<p>When we see a website that looks out of date, we perform a simple calculation. If your site looks out of touch, we think it equates that your business is also out of touch. I know you spend your spare time keeping up with the latest trends and developments. Hours of work and research. Why do you spend all that time and effort? To give your clients the very best service, right? So why not make sure your online shop window projects that? Right.</p>
<p>CLUE: <em>Look at your website now and answer this question honestly: does it look behind the times?</em></p>
<h3>3. Look More Professional</h3>
<p>It may be a cliche, but it&#8217;s still true that your website is your online shop window. Potential clients are looking for what you sell. They&#8217;re looking 24/7 every day of the year. If your website makes you look like a bunch of amateurs, clients will simply avoid you; but if you look professional online, they&#8217;re much more likely to stop a while and maybe even send in that all-important enquiry.</p>
<p>CLUE: <em>maybe it&#8217;s time to get some professional photos taken and get a copywriter to rewrite the text on your website?</em></p>
<h3>2. Google SEO</h3>
<p>The Yellow Pages have faded into near invisibility. The primary way people find businesses now is through online search and we all know that means Google. If you&#8217;re not visible on the largest search engine you need to do something about it. Whenever we are asked to examine a new client&#8217;s web visibility, the problem nearly always lies in the fact that they have a poorly optimised website. Sometimes the best thing you can do to improve your SEO (search engine optimisation) is to give your site a complete overhaul, with SEO designed into your site structure.</p>
<p>CLUE: <em>have an SEO audit conducted, but only from a professional who knows the difference between SEO and Search Engine Marketing. Adwords aren&#8217;t a substitute for a well-constructed website and could be a complete waste of your money.</em></p>
<h3>1. Get More Social</h3>
<p>Properly integrate your social media activity with your website. If you think that means just slapping on a Twitter and Facebook feed, you&#8217;re wrong. You&#8217;ve got to be smarter than that, because your clients certainly are. If your website isn&#8217;t social enough, you&#8217;re missing your best chance of attracting them. Good use of social media can help keep your website fresh, improve your SEO, get your potential and existing clients talking and give you fantastic opportunities to improve customer care. <p>CLUE: <em>choose your social media consultant wisely; most are amateurs dressed up. Look below the surface: how many followers do they have, and has anyone ever used them before? If so, are they happy to recommend that consultant? Do they &#8216;walk their talk&#8217;, is their social media activity respected? </em></p>
<h3>The Next Step</h3>
<p>The next thing you should do is get your site independently reviewed (i.e. not by you or one of your friends or relatives &#8211; they&#8217;ll just tell you variations of &#8220;it&#8217;s very nice, dear, now how about that game of Scrabble?&#8221;). Ask <strong><a title="Contact" href="http://inspiration.co.uk/contact/">a few of your friendly neighbourhood web designers</a></strong> and a few business owners you know to tell you straight what&#8217;s right or wrong with your website. <h3>The Formula for Harlem Shake Virals</h3>
<p>Now, according to an interesting article in TechCrunch entitled &#8220;<strong><a title="Harlem Shake" href="http://techcrunch.com/2013/02/18/what-is-the-harlem-shake-so-popular/" target="_blank">What Makes the Harlem Shake so Popular</a></strong>&#8220;, we even have a formula for the Harlem Shake meme:</p>

<p>You&#8217;ll have to read the article to see how the formula works, but the most interesting observation for marketers is that the beauty of the Harlem Shake video lies in its simplicity.</p>
<p>The videos are capped at 30 seconds, which makes them eminently shareable. There&#8217;s a clear and simple format, which encourages people to make their own. Best of all, they fit the trend for really short videos which apps like Viddy and Vine are making popular (although I would argue that they&#8217;re just responding to a change in public taste for shorter videos). They also have that essential WTF factor that makes videos shareable.</p>

<p>Tell your followers what you like about them. For example, this could be in the form of customised Follow Friday tweets highlighting what each person is particularly good at. You could share links to their websites on Facebook or G+.</p>
<p>Or how about arranging a small Hangout for just a few clients and share some tips with just them?</p>
<h3>Whisper Sweet Nothings</h3>
<p>Try this: think hard about what each client does and find little ways to help them. Why not send them links to relevant articles and blog posts that contain snippets that could give them opportunities to impress their bosses or clients? Do it via Private Message, rather than blasting it out to everyone. That will make the tips all the more valuable. Trade the possibility of a few retweets today for a stronger relationship with that client that may pay dividends tomorrow.</p>
<h3>Unexpected Gifts</h3>
<p>The top 3 gifts (in reverse order) that will always please a client are chocolates, wine, and a lead to some potential business. I really love this tip and use it as often as I can. My ears are always open for somebody saying a variation of &#8220;can anyone recommend a good book keeper/plumber/lawyer?&#8221;. There&#8217;s not much better than being able to help a client with another lead. They love it and will love you for being the connector.</p>
<h3>The Next Step</h3>
<p>It&#8217;s all about making people feel special. Be like the Ambassador in that old Ferrero Rocher advert with the pyramid of chocolate treats. With your tweets and mentions, you should be really spoiling us.</p>

<h3>The Chic Sleek Freak</h3>
<p>These are those über-cool &#8216;visual essays&#8217; that need a degree in Graphic Design to be understood. Instead of any normal interface such as a navigation menu, or linking text we might find something very different. Working out how to move from page to page is like figuring out how to complete a jigsaw puzzle without the picture on the lid. It may be intellectually stimulating at the right time, but it&#8217;s frustrating at all other times. How to avoid this problem: choose your <strong><a title="web designer Plymouth" href="http://inspiration.co.uk/plymouth-web-design/bespoke-websites/">web designer</a></strong> carefully.</p>
<p>A trendy hairstyle and an iPad may help to make a slick presentation, but it doesn&#8217;t help them understand your business and what it needs to stand out from the competition. Do they really get what your USP is and can they share it to your potential clients in a compelling and convincing way? Or are they going to give you another cookie-cutter website?</p>
<p>So beware: if they use equal parts jargon to hair gel, they may not be the best choice for you. If they can&#8217;t explain what they mean in plain English, give them a wide berth.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<h3>The Explosion in a Font Factory</h3>
<p>Whilst some websites may be too minimal, others are&#8230; not. These ones tend to be covered in free clip art that could originally have come via a CD-ROM that someone saw in the Bargain Box at their local superstore.</p>
<p>The mistake here: the website was created by an inexperienced &#8216;designer&#8217; with a sharp hairstyle but little experience, or by someone equally inexperienced but keen. Believe it or not, some people still get their young relatives to build a business website when they&#8217;re not doing their homework, despite their lack of business knowledge. Typically the former knows too much about the theory of design and not enough about the business of design. The latter knows little about design, typography or designing a human interface &#8211; and it shows.</p>
<p>Their sites could have been<span style="font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;"> </span><span style="font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;">(and often are)</span><span style="font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;"> self-built using a cheap software package or a free WordPress theme. Eventually their victims learn that saving a little money on their website costs their business much more than they save. The cost to your business reputation, and professional credibility could be terrible. An expensive lesson. Sometimes though, that lesson comes too late.</span></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<h3>The Coder&#8217;s Catastrophe</h3>
<p>The final type is a common mistake we see too often on the Internet. This type of website operates well enough from a technical point of view, but is all too often hideous to look at. You can always spot the Coder&#8217;s Catastrophe because of the horrible colour scheme and tiny images. Black and orange are favourite background colours, as are the most miserable greys in the visual spectrum. It may be cluttered with gadgets and gizmos that spin, whirl and may look impressive at first, but really just get in the user&#8217;s way.</p>
<p>This kind of website is usually created by a programmer (aka coder or developer) instead of a designer. How can you tell? It is too text heavy, uses plenty of jargon and lacks client appeal.</p>
<p>The real problem with the Coder&#8217;s Catastrophe is that it&#8217;s selfish. It was designed from the perspective of the person who built it and virtually never considers the perspective of the client or the business that this website is meant to represent. The cure? Ditch and get a designer to create a new one with a proper human user interface (i.e. something that easy to use and does only what it should do). Get the coders to do what they do best: programming parts of the site to do what it needs to do, efficiently. If you have one of these websites only a complete makeover will fix it.</p>

<h3>The Next Step</h3>
<p>How do you avoid these three common mistakes? Simple: choose a designer or agency that takes time to really understand the way you do business. Check their <strong><a title="Website Portfolio" href="http://inspiration.co.uk/portfolio/">portfolio and customer testimonials</a></strong>. Finally, spend time talking to them and only use them if you are confident that they have the experience and attitude to give your business the website it deserves. <h3>Attitude</h3>
<blockquote><p>“If all it takes is an angry stranger to ruin your day, what are you going to do if something really serious happens? Why give someone else control of your life like that?” Jeffrey Gitomer</p></blockquote>
<p>If we don&#8217;t tackle challenges from the right angle we can&#8217;t hope to succeed. You can read more from me about how <a title="How to Give Your Business Attitude" href="http://inspiration.co.uk/how-to-give-your-business-attitude/" target="_blank">attitude is about your angle of approach</a> here but it boils down to this: the biggest obstacle to tackling a challenge is you. If you don&#8217;t believe you are up to it, you won&#8217;t be. Of course belief isn&#8217;t enough; faith in your abilities alone won&#8217;t get you to the top of Mount Everest. You&#8217;ll need equipment, training, a team of professionals, physical fitness and some experience. But even if you have the best of all of these, if you don&#8217;t think you can do it, you won&#8217;t be able to. So work on your attitude today, tomorrow and don&#8217;t stop. Taking charge of your life is a lifelong practise.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<h3>Perseverance</h3>
<blockquote><p>“It always seems impossible until it&#8217;s done.” Nelson Mandela</p></blockquote>
<p>The problem with difficult challenges is that there comes a point when they seem impossible to achieve. The bigger the challenge, the longer they can take. We start off full of enthusiasm, eager to take it on. Then it gets hard and we head toward what Seth Godin calls The Dip. The point where we don&#8217;t seem to be getting anywhere with it. Sometimes we even seem to be going backwards. It seems pointless to continue, you&#8217;ll never get there anyway and you&#8217;re just exhausting yourself.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s precisely the point at which we should use a little objectivity and assess the project. Is it still a good idea? I&#8217;ll talk about that in the next section of this post. Let&#8217;s say you&#8217;ve looked at it rationally and it&#8217;s still a good idea but you just don&#8217;t know whether you&#8217;re up to it. That&#8217;s when we have to remember Nelson Mandela&#8217;s words and take another swing at it. Nothing great was ever achieved without perseverance and persistence. Every time you are knocked down by your challenge, get up again and have another go. Afterwards you&#8217;ll look back and wonder what all the fuss was about; of course you succeeded.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<h3>Objectivity</h3>
<p>This is the ability to remove your own emotions and look rationally at a project. It&#8217;s a key skill and it&#8217;s what will prevent you wasting time and resources. Will that business idea actually work? Is there a big enough demand in the market to justify this new product? Step out from yourself. It doesn&#8217;t matter if it was your idea or not, if it can&#8217;t work you need to know it as soon as possible.</p>

<p>Let me tell you about Jay (name and gender changed to protect the innocent!). A few years ago, he had to face financial reality when he was told that he owed £50,000 on his credit cards. For a little while he was pretty depressed about it. He had no idea how he could tackle the challenge of finding that money. His income was fixed and he wasn&#8217;t a big earner. He&#8217;d just piled up small debts over the years until it had reached this point.</p>
<p>It seemed impossible but he couldn&#8217;t just give in. Declaring bankruptcy was out of the question for him. So he took a deep breath, decided to ignore his emotional state and sat down with some blank paper. He broke down his debt repayments into small monthly amounts. He brainstormed and came up with some ways to add new income streams by starting an online business (that&#8217;s how we met him). He made a plan and decided to tackle his enormous challenge rationally by breaking it into bite-sized chunks that he could manage. It took him a few years and a great deal of persistence and self-discipline, but today he is debt-free, happy and makes a good living from the website we built for him. He says if he had given in to his emotions he&#8217;d never have managed it. Being objective when he needed to enabled Jay to change his life.</p>

As we&#8217;ve now entered the Age of Social Networking, I was asked recently as a social media specialist to speak at a business networking event about how we could interpret them for today. So here are my 7 Deadly Sins of Social Media.</p>

<p>&nbsp;</p>
<h3>Lust</h3>
<p>Lust? It&#8217;s a great word isn’t it? I know, I know. Your mind has spun off at a tangent. My favourite definition of this word is that it&#8217;s an acronym for Leaking Underground Storage Tank! But in social media terms it can be self-destructive when we lust after the wrong things. Some people lust after attention online. This sometimes leads them to make poor choices. Such as using language that&#8217;s unprofessional. It gets attention, but often for the wrong reasons: it turns off potential clients. Keep your clients close by remembering that everything you say online is visible – there’s no such thing as a private message online.</p>
<h3>Gluttony</h3>
<p>Sometimes it seems like there are 7 billion social media platforms currently available. That works out as one per person on this planet. The social media glutton has an account on each one. The problem is that he doesn&#8217;t have time to get any work done because it takes 23.5 hours a day to post on them all.</p>
<h3>Greed</h3>
<p>The Greedy Social Media Sinner wants it all. He wants 100,000 followers by next week. He wants 10,000 Likes on Facebook and 500+ LinkedIn connections. BUT, he&#8217;s really doesn&#8217;t want to put the effort in to build a relationship with them. That&#8217;s too much like hard work. So he buys twitter followers from some dodgy online offer, and Links In with anyone at all – even if there&#8217;s no chance of any actual business coming out of it. The end result? A lot of empty numbers. Don&#8217;t be greedy, earn your followers by becoming a source of valuable information. This is the information economy after all.</p>
<h3>Sloth</h3>
<p>The social media Sloth loves to tweet, facebook and share. But only once a week. Or maybe twice a month. Actually, she&#8217;s somehow too busy to tweet most of the time. The last time was in March, or was it January? Oh, and she loves to link her accounts so that all she has to do is tweet once and exactly the same message is shared everywhere. Hashtags and all. We all see the evidence of these people around us, but I urge you not to become one of them.</p>
<h3><a href="http://inspiration.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/Angry_Birds.jpg"><img class="alignleft size-full wp-image-1379" title="Angry_Birds" src="http://inspiration.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/Angry_Birds.jpg" alt="" width="400" height="266" /></a>Wrath</h3>
<p>You&#8217;ve heard of Angry Birds? This guy is the Angry Tweeter. He&#8217;s always got a problem, always has a social wrong to right. He always gets bad service in bars and restaurants and the first thing he does is tweet it out for the world to see. What&#8217;s wrong with this picture? All we know of him is that he&#8217;s always getting into an argument over something. Our conclusion? He&#8217;s got a bad attitude and we wouldn&#8217;t want to do business with him.</p>
<h3>Envy</h3>
<p>Every time I look on Facebook or Twitter, I see something that makes me grind my teeth. Have you noticed how everyone except you is having such an amazing time? They&#8217;re going to meetings that are more like drinks with friends than a sales pitch. They&#8217;re winning new clients every 8 seconds. They&#8217;re making money while they sleep! What?! Where&#8217;s all the hard graft of the real world? Why don&#8217;t they ever have a bad hair day or ever just miss the bus on a rainy day?</p>
<p>Of course, this is the social media world and these are just the edited highlights. For public consumption. Don&#8217;t worry about what they&#8217;re doing, concentrate on getting what you&#8217;re doing right.</p>
<h3>Pride</h3>
<p>How many Likes do you have on your Facebook Page? What about twitter followers? More than me, or him or her? Who cares? If all you talk about online is how utterly amazing you are, you&#8217;re a Social Media Sinner. When what you do is more important than what we do, it shows. And shows repeatedly. Don&#8217;t misunderstand me. A certain amount of pride is actually a good thing IMHO. We should be proud of our achievements, but carried too far it becomes boastfulness. That&#8217;s when it becomes a real turn-off for us and that is why we unfollow you. Share your successes but try sharing those of others more frequently.</p>

<p>Increase the number of people who visit your site and you get more clients, right? Wrong. The reality is that no matter how much traffic your website sees, unless your website is optimised to convert traffic into enquiries, you&#8217;re wasting your time.</p>

<h3>How to Optimise Your Website to Convert Traffic Into Enquiries</h3>
<p>Too many small businesses fail to understand the importance of converting traffic into enquiries. Think of it like this. If you owned a shop on the high street and wanted to increase sales, you&#8217;d do whatever it took to bring more people in. Anything from advertising to leaflet drops to walking around in a sandwich board. Great, but you wouldn&#8217;t see much of an increase in sales if all your staff ignored the customers,  after they&#8217;d arrived in your store would you? The sad truth is that this is exactly what many small businesses do with their websites. Can you afford to be one of them? Are you already? To find out, you only need to do two things:</p>
<ul>
<li>first compare your visitor stats against your enquiries from your website (if there&#8217;s a big difference, your conversion rate is low) and</li>
<li>secondly get your web designers to tell you how your conversion rate could be improved. If you don&#8217;t feel like asking them, either <a title="Contact Design Inspiration" href="http://inspiration.co.uk/contact/" target="_blank">ask me</a> or check these four things yourself.</li>

<p>What&#8217;s the navigation like on your website? Get someone who hasn&#8217;t used it before to browse your website, and peer over their shoulder while they do it. Work out if they find it simple to find key areas like product pages, contact details, enquiry forms, etc. Resist the urge to tell them where to go, but note down where they find it hardest.</p>
<p>Look for common sources of confusion, such as having more than one navigation menu on the page (some sites have one at the top and another on the side &#8211; what&#8217;s that all about?). Are there too many drop-down submenus? Does the user keep losing their place? You get the picture.</p>

<h3>Use a Responsive Website Design</h3>
<p>An increasing number of people will visit your website via a mobile device (phone, tablet etc.) over the next months and years. How does your site look on them? Does it convert gracefully or does it simply shrink down into a tiny illegible blur? Is it still easy to navigate? If your site uses Flash, it could be completely useless on an iPhone or iPad. Maybe it&#8217;s time you talked to your web designers about an update.</p>

<h3>Great Websites Use Great Photography</h3>
<p>The famous Chinese saying is often paraphrased as &#8220;a picture speaks a thousand words&#8221; but a blurry nondescript photo could be saying to your clients: &#8220;get away from this bunch of amateurs as quickly as possible&#8221;. Great and appropriate photography can act like a magnet for enquiries. It increases buyer confidence and enhances your professionalism instantly. Chefs say we eat with our eyes, well if that is true we also certainly buy with our eyes too.</p>

<h3>Make Your Copy Compelling</h3>
<p>Take a fresh look at the text on your website. Does it have your personality, your attitude, your passion for what you do? Does it make you feel that you want to get to know the people behind the website right now, or does it make you say: &#8220;Meh, let&#8217;s check the next one&#8221;? Look for dynamic prose that&#8217;s full of active language and most importantly of all, effective calls to action. If it doesn&#8217;t have them, talk to a professional copywriter; one that really understands how to write for the Internet. Trust me, they&#8217;re as rare as hen&#8217;s teeth. <p>To succeed in business you have to stand out from the crowd. Being memorable is probably the best marketing tip you&#8217;ll ever get for your small business; and you don&#8217;t have to pay an agency&#8217;s expensive retainer fees to learn it either brcause I&#8217;ve just given it you for free. Here&#8217;s another: one of the best ways to stand out is by allowing your business to have an attitude.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<h3>Angle of Approach</h3>
<p>Attitude can mean different things to different people. To a Life Coach it can mean your approach to what you do or how you live and this is usually expressed in either positive or negative terms. To an airline pilot though attitude (as opposed to altitude) means a different thing altogether; it refers to a plane&#8217;s orientation in relation the horizon and can mean the difference between soaring in the stratosphere or slamming into the ground. Which makes it a pretty important thing. That&#8217;s why pilots keep a careful eye on their attitude and apply many thousands of tiny course corrections during their flight. It&#8217;s my opinion that our attitude to our business is just as critical. There&#8217;s a wonderful formula that pilots use which goes</p>

<h3>You&#8217;ve Got to Sass It</h3>
<p>How does your business stand out? I always ask new clients what their USP is but very few can answer me. Typically I get a wishy-washy answer  listing some minor differences between what they offer and what their competitors do. Rarely do I see a fresh new approach that makes them stand out as radically different. Without clear and valid differentiation, based on what your clients want, you can&#8217;t hope to stand out. Shout it out, wear it on a t-shirt or hold a placard. It doesn&#8217;t matter how you do it, so long as you do it. If you don&#8217;t stand out, how do you expect a potential client to care about your success?</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Attitude gives your business personality. It gives you a story. It makes clients sit up and listen to you. Take a Time Out now and ask yourself a few radical questions. What&#8217;s your story? What do you fight for? Where do you draw the lines? Unless you let others know what you&#8217;re passionate about, how can you expect them to be passionate about your brand?</p>

<h3>Get an Independent View</h3>
<p>Take a look at you website, your leaflets. your flyers, your adverts and your social media activity. Are you displaying any kind of attitude? What would a stranger think you believed in if all they saw was those? This is the time to talk to your web designers, copywriter and your social media advisers. Do you need their help? Ask them for an independent opinion. Don&#8217;t ask your friends or family, they&#8217;ll only tell you what they think you want to hear. If you want a straight answer, ask me to take a look. I&#8217;ll be happy to give you my assessment, but be warned: I&#8217;ll be honest about what I see.</p>

<h3>The Next Step</h3>
<p>Showing your attitude comes at a price though. Are you prepared to pay it? For every person that understands and empathises with you, everyone who gets what you&#8217;re about, expect to receive some flak from those who don&#8217;t appreciate or agree with you. That&#8217;s okay, though because it&#8217;s a sign that you&#8217;re standing out. Expect also to face opposition from people who will dislike you just because you aren&#8217;t afraid to take a stance. Ultimately though, they&#8217;ll be overshadowed by those who love you for your attitude. Take a stand, draw a line in the sand, then let rip with what you believe in.</p>
